Hike & Hydrate: Mt. Baldy and Brickside Brewery
Welcome to our weekly series Hike & Hydrate! We'll exploring some of our favorite hiking in the Upper Peninsula and following them up with a visit to some local breweries and watering holes.
Hike: Helmut & Candis Stern Preserve at MT. Baldy
Rising 730 feet above Lake Superior in northern Keweenaw County near Eagle Harbor and Lake Bailey, this 6.4 mile round trip hike offers a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Superior and the surrounding Keweenaw Peninsula. Mt. Baldy is the largest and least disturbed of only a handful of balds remaining in the Keweenaw Peninsula where you can hike amongst wind-contorted white cedar and juniper near its summit. Keep the binoculars handy as this is also an excellent opportunity to spot migrating birds of prey. This is also a great winter snowshoe or hike for the whole family.
Directions to Mt. Baldy
To get there from our Houghton Store drive north on US-41 past Calumet about 30 miles and turn left on the Eagle Harbor Shortcut road. At around 5 miles, turn right into a gravel parking lot with a large sign for the preserve. Get Directions Here.Hydrate: Brickside Brewery, Copper Harbor Michigan
After your hike, you will want to drive further north to the tip of the Keweenaw and home to the Brickside Brewery. This quaint little brewery offers true north ambience and excellent beer. The relaxed, friendly atmosphere of Michigan's northermost brewery is a great way to wrap up a great day on the trail.
