Hike & Hydrate: Hogback Mountain and Ore Dock Brewing Company
Welcome to our weekly series Hike & Hydrate! We'll be exploring some of our favorite hiking in the Upper Peninsula and following them up with a visit to some local breweries and watering holes.
Hike: Hogback Mountain
A popular 3.6 mile round trip summit climb, Hogback Mountain is the prominate peak that rises just to the north of Marquette. The hike to the summit of Hogback offers one of the most spectacular views of the surrounding area.
The rocky trail starts out through a mixed deciduous forest passing through a couple of swampy areas before you ascend a small hill and Hogback Mountain comes into view. The trail drops down to a stream crossing and proceeds through an open forest of mature hemlocks. Follow the trail until you come to a small creek. The trail here begins to climb the mountain proper. The steepestĀ part of this climb is near the summit where you will have to ascend a smooth rock to gain the top. The summit is unique in that its summit is mostly devoid of vegetation offering a 360 degree view of the surrounding area including the vast expanse of Lake Superior!
