Chasing Steel: Spring Steelhead in the Upper Peninsula

Every year addicted anglers don their cold weather gear and hit the Upper Peninsula streams in search of steel! Called “the fish of a thousand casts”, steelhead are migratory rainbow trout that are born in rivers but spend most of their lives in the Great Lakes or the ocean. These fish are known fighters, making them a very popular species for sport fishing and the Upper Peninsula has some excellent steelhead rivers! Depending on the year, from April until June, the Steelhead begin to show up to spawn in these streams and anglers should be ready!

In the weeks leading up to the start of the steelhead run, anglers are left with little to do except watch the weather reports and wait. Anglers should prepare for the upcoming season by making sure you have the gear you need to land the big one.
