Best Upper Peninsula Hikes to Beat the Bugs
May through July is incredible hiking weather in the Upper Peninsula, not too warm, not too cold, as a matter of fact it is just right. The only problem is that it can be prime bug season. Many a Yooper has been chased from the woods by pesky mosquitoes and the notorious black fly. No need to toss the hiking boots back into the closet, check out these (relativly) bug free hikes close to our stores in Marquette, Munising, and Houghton!
Houghton Area - Hunter's Point Trail in Copper Harbor
Leaving from the marina just east of town, this trail follows the harbor out to the big lake where a cobble beach and large rock outcrops only serve to enhance the beautiful view of Lake Superior. A gentle breeze will keep the bugs at bay and makes this a great place to be when most of the inland trails are overrun with swarms of blood suckers.
Marquette Area - Wetmore Landing to Little Presque Isle
Arguably one of the more scenic hikes in the U.P., this shoreline trail is an out and back hike that begins at the beautiful white sand beach at Wetmore Landing. What makes it bug free? The trail hugs the Lake Superior Shoreline where a cool breeze helps to keep those pesky critters at bay. This 3.6 mile out and back trail features beautiful beach walking, traversing into a rocky trail, and finally climbing up the cliff line providing amazing views of the lake below. Finish your hike with a refreshing dip in Lake Superior before heading back to your car.
Munising Area - Grand Sable Dunes
The breeze blowing from Lake Superior across these rolling sand dunes is enough to keep the bugs at bay, mostly. Enjoy this unique ecosystem and a fun hike down to the Lake. Take in the dune plants and keep your eyes open for the Pitcher's Thistle which was discovered here and found in only one other place in the Upper Peninsula.
