A Room With A View: 5 Great Upper Peninsula Campgrounds on Lake Superior
If you are traveling through the Upper Peninsula, there is no better feeling in the world than waking up to the sight, sound, and smell of the greatest fresh water lake in the world! Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes, and among freshwater lakes, it is the world's largest by surface area and the third-largest by volume. Camping along its shores can be one of the most enjoyable experiences one can have. From sunrises, sunsets, beachcombing, rock hunting and star gazing, Lake Superior beach camping is the absolute best! Lucky of us, the Upper Peninsula has more than 900 miles of Lake Superior shoreline for us to enjoy.
As much as we love the solitude of a backcountry campsite (see some of our favorites here), there's something great about the convenience and social nature of a campground that's hard to beat. Whether you're in a campervan, an RV, an overland rig, or a tent, these campgrounds will give you an experience you surely won't forget.
Presque Isle Campground Porcupine Mountains State Park
At roughly 60,000 acres, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan’s largest state park. It is home to 35,000 acre old-growth forest, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, more than 90 miles of hiking trails, the Lake Superior shoreline and vistas unrivaled anywhere in the Midwest. At the far southwestern end of the park sits the Presque Isle Campground. This peaceful campground is situated along the Presque Isle River which empties into Lake Superior. The campsites are situated on a high bluff above Superior where you can spend time looking out over the lake, or you can hike along the river to enjoy the beautiful but powerful waterfalls.
Sunset Bay Campground-Ahmeek
Located directly on the shores of Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula, Sunset Bay RV Resort & Campground is one of the oldest continuously operating campgrounds in the Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Off the beaten path, just the way we like it, camping by the lake, you can right by the lake for enjoying the swimming beach, hunting for agates, gazing at the night amazing dark sky, or watching the sun set into Superior.

Union Bay Campground Porcupine Mountains State Park
The Union Bay Campground is a modern drive in campground located at the Porcupine Mountains State Park. Our favorite sites are the ones where you can hear waves crashing along the rocky shoreline of Union Bay, off Lake Superior. Park the van and take a short walk to the sandy beach located along M-107.
Bayfurnace Campground- Munising
At Bay Furnace Campground you can enjoy the scenic view of Lake Superior with its spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and occasional northern light displays. This convenient location makes it a perfect site for vanlifer's who would like to pull up and camp for the night. This campground is the perfect basecamp for hitting the mountain bike trails in Munising, kayaking Pictured Rocks or searching out the many waterfalls that are near.
